TREE PLANTING DAY

On November 6th, 2023, the government of Kenya declared November 13th, 2023, a National Public Holiday dedicated to a tree-planting and growing exercise led by President William Ruto. This announcement elicited different reactions, “A whole business day wasted! This must be a sick joke.”

AN OVERVIEW OF THE PROPOSED FINANCE BILL 2023

The Finance Bill, 2023 (the “Bill”) aims at expanding the tax base of the Government of Kenya. The Bill has attracted nationwide interest as the Government seeks to increase taxes collected in view of the prevailing economic circumstances. The Bill is the most comprehensive Finance Bill yet, and proposes a raft of changes, as highlighted below.

WHY THE GOVERNMENT COULD SOON BE COMING FOR YOUR MONEY

The United States of America state department in 2014 categorised Kenya as safe haven for money laundering in Africa. The actual words were: “Kenya is categorised as a Jurisdiction/ country of primary concern in respect of money laundering and financial crimes1.” Despite Parliament having enacted the Proceeds of Crime and Anti-Money Laundering Act No. 9 of 2009 (POCAMLA)2, the same appeared to have had little effect on its intended objectives.
